Driven wouldn’t exist without local participants, coaches, event organizers and activists to write for us. Without a knowledgeable writing team, our columns and stories would be fluff, and we know you don’t want to read fluff! Here is a little background information on our columnists, those who have committed to write for us year-round, even with their real jobs, training, and families keeping them busy throughout the year. Although we couldn’t profile them all here, we would also like to thank our event review writers, gear review writers, and guest columnists for the Coach’s Corner, all of whom donate their writing as involved members of the community who want to share with other readers. You all rock!

Image Terie Box, Publisher and Editor

Terie writes everything in Driven that the contributing writers don’t, and also takes photos for Driven at local events. Due to a problem with authority and an inability to write obituaries, Terie decided she wanted to be the editor of her own magazine over a decade ago. A native Memphian, she grew up in the same outdoor and multisport community that she now covers for Driven, competing in multisport, swimming and running events for the past ten years. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in News Journalism with minors in English from the University of Memphis. Before launching Driven, she wrote a fitness column for the Commercial Appeal for two years, along with several other jobs that didn’t utilize her degrees. Terie currently coaches a Masters Swim Team, swims, and loves to run the trails, and is also the new president of Share the Road Midsouth. She is married to Driven’s art designer, Trey Street, and together they have a one year-old daughter, Juniper. Terie’s goal for Driven is to unite the community of local athletes and inspire readers to try new activities. Combining writing and news with the sports she loves is a dream come true for her!

Image Kendra Cox, Funny Bone columnist

Kendra is our humor columnist, a constantly-joking person who also happens to love fitness. She was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and before moving to Memphis in August of 2005, lived in Oxford, Mississippi for three years. Kendra attended Duke University and received her Bachelor’s Degree in English and Drama. She worked as a professional writer, actor, and improvisational comedy performer in her native Atlanta for seven years before heading back to school to get her Master’s Degree in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi. She met her future husband in 2004 at a car race, and they were married in April of 2007. Kendra says she was overweight for most of her life, a “chubby kid, chunky teenager, and ‘ton of fun’ party girl” in her twenties. Around the time she turned 30, she says she experienced a personal renaissance of sorts. Kendra started exercising - and liked it. She started taking an interest in what she was eating rather than eating as much as possible of everything. Her first 10K was the Double Decker festival in Oxford in April of 2005, and she ran the St. Jude Half Marathon in December of that year. “I’m hooked!” she says. She even changed her career focus and got her personal training certification. She is now the Fitness Director and Corporate Wellness Coordinator at WellWorX Sporting Clubs. Kendra says she hopes that her writing in Driven will make readers laugh, and that people might recognize themselves in her stumbling and bumbling. She says she loves hearing feedback, so bring it on - share your thoughts and experiences. As she says, “I like to think I’m not alone!”

Image Kat Spottswood, Eat Your Heart Out columnist

Kat gives us a practical take on food in every issue, and we love her helpful advice on practicing healthy eating habits that compliment our lifestyles. She has lived in Memphis for four years, since she moved here for graduate school. She is most recently from Knoxville, although she grew up in Kentucky, then Texas, before moving here. Kat attended college at Samford University, then graduate school at the University of Memphis. She majored in nutrition/dietetics in college and currently works at the Saint Francis Center for Surgical Weight Loss. Kat married Andrew Spottswood in March of 2005 and they welcomed their first child, their son Griffin, on September third of this year. Kat says that she has been interested in nutrition for as long as she can remember, and has always loved running and outdoor activities as well. Luckily for us, she also loves to write and looks for any excuse to tell others what she knows about nutrition. She says she hopes our readers will learn something from her column that will affect their ability to take care of themselves.

Trey Street, Music To Move To colulmnist; Art and Web Designer

Trey is originally from Leland , Mississippi, a small town with a population of 1,920, and home of the great - and one and only - Jim Henson. He moved to Memphis at the age of ten and became involved with music early, beating on drums and playing bass guitar by the age of 15. He says he always loved the ideas and science of music, and about ten years ago, started collecting electronic music gear, from synths to drum machines to mixers. This interest birthed three albums of music by Trey’s electronic music band, The Logical Operators, and numerous collaborations with local like-minded musicians. Trey’s other interest is art and design. He has been involved in Driven’s design since day one, constantly looking for the opportunity to improve the content’s appearance. Currently, Trey is a consultant to the printing industry in Memphis and holds more than 30 manufacturer certifications in the imaging industry. Trey is married to Driven’s editor, Terie Box, and teaches their daughter, Juniper, how to use mixing boards. He says he is writing for Driven in an attempt to help broaden our readers’ exposure to music that never hits the mainstream, and music artists that he feels are relevant and unique. Each column is a journey, he says, as he attempts to whittle down the vast world of music to a band that, at the moment, is fresh and moving. He hopes those who read his column will not only seek out the music he writes about, but will also send him their reactions once they hear it.

Image David Lacek, Spin City columnist

David loves cycling, and it shows. A fierce competitor, he’s softspoken in person, but lets his personality shine in his columns. David owned a homebuilding company and worked winters as a professional ski coach for 15 years prior to graduate school. Originally from the Philadelphia area in the Catskill Mountains of New York, David came to Memphis in 1998 after completing his MBA in Enterprise Consulting at the University of Alabama. He went to Gettysburg College for a dual undergrad degree in Studio Art and Business Management. He met his wife Janice at school, and their daughter Grace is three years old. David currently works at International Paper on business process design and software enablement of new designs. He has ridden bikes since he was a kid, raced bikes in the USCF and timed events, and even won in a Masters World Cup Cycling event. David has training, race, coaching and general biomechanic knowledge in both skiing and cycling, and says he’ll always love to see people get better. He has a professional ski teaching/coaching certification equating a degree at or above the Masters level, 25 years of experience in the field, and currently coaches skiing. David says he admires Steve Prefontaine’s philosophies, and invites cyclists to look for him on group rides!

Image Rob Weatherly, Work It Out columnist

Every quarter the editorial staff looks forward to learning new vocabulary words from Rob’s column. Not only is he intelligent, but he also photographs well, which is really helpful, since hiring fitness models can get expensive. Rob is a native of Murray, Kentucky who moved to Memphis four and a half years ago to work as the Sports Performance Director at Velocity Sports Performance in Cordova, where he is now Center Director. Before moving to Memphis, he attended Murray State University, where he played baseball, majored in exercise physiology, and worked as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. Rob says that exercise and sports science have been his passions for a long time, and that he hopes his coaching profession and writing for Driven will help others better understand how to maximize their athletic potential.
