TOFU : White Gold? E-mail
Written by Trey Street

I have been a vegetarian for about the last 20 years and no matter the conversation on the topic, it always seems to digress to “Why are you a vegetarian?” This column will attempt to answer this question and do so with absolutely no moral or ethical angles. I bet at this point I just got your attention for the whole article.

2010 Memphis in May Triathlon E-mail

This year’s Memphis in May Triathlon, aside from being unseasonably hot, held up its reputation as the biggest, most exciting tri of the year in the Midsouth. Memphis in May Tri is always a fantastic event for competitors; safety is always a priority, and this year was a good example of the race directors’ attention to the triathletes out on the course. As the heat pushed several participants to their knees during the run, they were quickly picked up and cared for or taken to the medical tent. Everybody showed up and raced the course for what turned out to be last time. Surprising everyone, Start 2 Finish dropped a bombshell that weekend, announcing that the race will relocate to a new venue next year, making 2010 the last year of MIM in Millington. In 2011, Harrah’s Casino will host the race in Tunica. While this is a surprise, many athletes expressed their approval at changing the venue.

Work It Out: Cross-Training Strength for Multisport E-mail
Written by Rob Weatherly

Many athletes excel in a particular field – running, swimming, or cycling, perhaps – but often they will say they feel they have a weak core, legs, or upper body, depending on which areas are neglected while training for their chosen sport. In an effort to strengthen those muscle groups, many athletes are looking for an all-around strengthening workout for every muscle group from head to toe. Training for specific goals should be your first priority for establishing what training program you are going to start. It should dictate how and to what degree of intensity you are going to train.

Spin City: THE 2010 TOUR DE FRANCE: Who’s in it to win? E-mail
Written by Matt Joiner

It seemed like a simple task at first. Write a piece about the upcoming Tour de France? Sure, no problem. After watching the race for more than 20 years, even attending in person last year, a short article analyzing the contenders and their chances should be a piece of cake, right? Well, apparently, it wasn’t going to happen that easily.
The problem is, in the last decade or so, the race has had a cyclical nature (horrible pun absolutely intended), and not in a good way. The cycle involved has little to do with wheels, gears, and chain rings, and everything to do with pharmaceuticals, centrifuges, and blood bags. It all began in 1998 when the Festina team’s soigneur, Willy Voet, was caught trying to cross the Franco-Belgian border with enough EPO and growth hormone to stock a mid-size hospital. The race would go on that year, followed by a media circus, but cycling’s “dirty little secret” was now in the open and ever since then the problem of performance-enhancing drugs has popped up every few years like clockwork. The Festina team was removed from that race and many of the Spanish teams would later bow out in “solidarity,” but the race would finish on the Champs-Élysées like all the years before. Cycling survived the “Festina” affair and returned to a semblance of its old self, but a dark cloud remained over the sport for years to come.
