In Your Own Backyard: Stanky Creek E-mail

You don’t have to stretch your imagination to understand how Stanky Creek got its name. It isn’t named after some unfortunate pioneer family who couldn’t afford to pay to change their moniker, and there wasn’t a tribe of Native Americans settled there who gave it a traditional name in their own language.      This may be the best time of year to visit downtown, when the breezes off the Mississippi can cool you off a little from the oppressive southern summer heat. After strolling through the Memphis Farmer’s Market, why not head over to Mud Island River Park for a little outdoor fun? If you don’t live downtown, it’s a possibility that you’ve never used this resource for all it has to offer, situated right on the mighty Mississippi. This tourist attraction is also a useful local park, with breathtaking views of the river our city was founded on, and so many activities that one day really isn’t enough time to take it all in.

Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22, initiated in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. In 1969, he announced that on this day, there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration to force issues concerning the environment onto the national agenda. An estimated 20 million Americans participated in that first Earth Day, which is considered to be the birth of the modern environmental movement.
Earth Day in 1990 gave a huge boost to the recycling movement, while the same holiday in the year 2000 was focused on global warming and clean energy. By 2007, people from around the world were participating in Earth Day activities, that year setting the record of an estimated billion human beings taking part.
Here in our fair city, this year’s Earth Day celebrations will be taking place at outdoor parks and nature centers in many parts of town, and we invite you to participate as active members of our outdoor community. Here are a few of the places to take your kids, friends, and co-workers to help raise their awareness about our Earth’s environmental issues...
