Remember this sing-song rhyme from your kid-hood: “So-And-So and Thus-And Such, sittin’ in a tree - K-I-S-S-I-N-G!” Then there’s something about love, and something else about marriage, and then somebody’s doing something with some kind of carriage. It’s an interesting journey into the Natural Order of Things, I guess, and Mister and I have followed the pattern to a T. Right down to pushing a baby carriage come May! Yep, I’m knocked up. I like saying “great with child.” I’m 20 weeks into the adventure, and at any given time, I’m fascinated, frustrated, thrilled, terrified, in over my head…not to mention exhausted and winded. |

Many of my athletic friends were born athletic. Others, like me, discovered athletics down the road a little. Or a lot. Our motivations for being physically active all somewhat different, but rare is the athlete who doesn’t love to eat. And I mean, LOVE. TO. EAT. |

I used to love to swim. I couldn’t wait to get in the water, and my folks had to drag me out after hours of fun, with red eyes and wrinkly fingers and toes. But when I was about eight or nine years old, my family went out in some canoes on a lake near Camp David in Maryland. I wasn’t too crazy about the unstable feeling, but I would have gotten over it if my cousin (nine months older than I, a boy, and therefore rotten to the core) kept telling me that there were octopi in the water. Yes, octopi: multiple beasts with multiple tentacles, all reaching for the bottom of the canoe, eager to flip it and suction me to death. To punctuate his torture, he’d rattle my canoe when I wasn’t looking. I was living a Jules Verne novel. It wasn’t fun. |

I was plenty excited to go to Climb Night at BRIDGES, but I think my husband was even more pumped up. In fact, I’m sure of it. In addition to being excited, I felt confident that I wouldn’t be totally lost on this adventure – we were indoors, after all, in downtown Memphis. We weren’t in the wilderness. Or were we? |

I’m married to Grizzly Adams. At least, that’s how I think of him. Here’s an example of what rings his chimes: last winter, he and his buddies went to Virgin Falls, an idyllic and remote spot east of Knoxville. They arrived in the dead of night and hiked uphill into a snowstorm. When they got to their campsite, their boogers were frozen. And they still can’t stop grinning when they talk about it or look at the pictures. The view that rewarded them at dawn the next day made it all worthwhile. Or so they say. |
