A new jersey has been showing up at the multisport and off-road biking events around town – and you may have seen their pop-up tent and banner at the Los Locos Duathlon or the Wolfpack Triathlon this spring, but if you haven’t seen them yet, don’t worry, you will.
The Journeymen Racing team is comprised of about 20 people from all types of backgrounds; some of them run, some of them ride, and a lot of them tri. These fun-loving guys got their official start in March of 2009, but two of the four founding members actually met the year before at a Wolfpack Triathlon Training Day run by the Terrapin Racing team. Shawn McKinney (“SMACK”), 25, and Charles Flanigan (“Shakey”), 36, were both training for their first triathlon when they met, and decided to start training together. Enter Brad Hopper (“BHopper”), 32, who they met on a Friday night “beer ride” with some of the Stanky Creek Cycling riders, and Adam Eisan (“Memphis Buckeye”), 31, also a Stanky Creek rider. These four guys were quickly united by their love of riding the trails.

Every year, the staff of Driven attends outdoor and multisport events where athletes give their all and race like their lives depend on it. We’re used to seeing people killing themselves for the sports they love. But imagine our surprise every time we see hundreds of sweaty, tired, dirty triathletes...getting passed by this young whippersnapper! If you haven’t met him officially, you’ve probably raced with him over the past few years. Seth Rider comes from a family of triathletes, and with his father Walt Rider as a competitive force in the Memphis tri scene, we suppose Seth was bound to follow in his dad’s footsteps sooner or later.

Driven Athlete Nick Lewis: Memphis’ Running Wunderkind E-mail
Written by Terie Box

At only 24 years old, 5’3” tall, and weighing in at a mere 110 pounds, Nick Lewis used to be easy to overlook when sizing up the competition at the front of a footrace, but don’t be fooled by this ultra-runner’s sleight frame and quiet demeanor. In 2009 he took the long-distance running community by storm, and it’s only the beginning for Nick, who let us in on his plans for the future, and what it was like to race an amazing 100 miles in the Leadville Trail 100.

The U.S. Adventure Racing Nationals of 2009 E-mail
Written by Charlie Duke

A first-hand look back at the 24-hour race of local adventure racing team Verlassen, as told by Charlie Duke.

Olaf Schulz, Wendy Ragle, and I raced at U.S. Adventure Race Association’s 24-hr national championship race in Pilot Point, Texas, on October 23-24, 2009. It’s kind of a big part of the athletic year. For the uninitiated, adventure racing is a recipe for tired athletes. The recipe for this large scale scavenger hunt goes something like this: 2 c mountain biking, 2 c trail running, 1.5 c canoeing, 1 oz map coordinate plotting, 2.5 lbs orienteering with a map and compass (no GPS allowed), 15 lbs soggy safety gear, lifejackets, paddles, and food in a backpack, 2 wet soggy feet with muddy socks, 1 dash dehydration, 1 sprig poison ivy, Salt to taste.
