2010 Memphis in May Triathlon E-mail

This year’s Memphis in May Triathlon, aside from being unseasonably hot, held up its reputation as the biggest, most exciting tri of the year in the Midsouth. Memphis in May Tri is always a fantastic event for competitors; safety is always a priority, and this year was a good example of the race directors’ attention to the triathletes out on the course. As the heat pushed several participants to their knees during the run, they were quickly picked up and cared for or taken to the medical tent. Everybody showed up and raced the course for what turned out to be last time. Surprising everyone, Start 2 Finish dropped a bombshell that weekend, announcing that the race will relocate to a new venue next year, making 2010 the last year of MIM in Millington. In 2011, Harrah’s Casino will host the race in Tunica. While this is a surprise, many athletes expressed their approval at changing the venue.

Hadassah 5K Honoring Breast Cancer Survivors E-mail

The 11th annual Hadassah Breast Cancer 5K and Family Fun Walk at Shelby Farms will be held Sunday, May 2. Named “In Living Color,” this year’s race is dedicated to breast cancer survivors. Friends, family, and breast cancer survivors are encouraged to attend. Survivors will be honored with pastel T-shirts in an array of different colors. “There are a great many women in our community who survived the breast cancer experience and are leading wonderful, productive lives,” says race chair, Angela Gordon. “Our goal is to create a sea of living color to honor these wonderful women and their families.”
Donations can be made in honor of family members or friends, and a list of honorees will be read. “We want people to see that breast cancer education and research really does pay off,” said Emily Steinberg, the event’s founder. Emily has dedicated many hours to the “Check It Out” program, which teaches women and teenage girls how to do self breast exams. More than one million women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide each year, and the need to raise funds for research is ongoing.
This year’s race will be sanctioned by MRTC. Music, food and fun will follow the event, and this year there will be special events for children ages nine and younger. Visit Hadassah5k.com for a schedule of events and registration.

Winter Event Review: An Introduction to Winter Triathlon What is Winter Triathlon? E-mail
Written by Terie Box
Monday, 08 February 2010
Perhaps the most depressing thing about winter, for triathletes, is the fact that there aren’t any races. Seriously, what could be more depressing than a racer without a race? Well, in many parts of America, triathletes refuse to give in to the “off season” – no, they continue to compete in three-leg multisport events straight through the snow and sleet, in events known as “winter triathlons.” Sure, the events are a bit different from the summer swim-bike-run races you’re used to, but apparently they’re close enough to the real thing to be called a “triathlon” by USAT. So if you can’t handle the off season, and you can handle the brutality of racing in the snow – and if you’re ready and willing to travel – winter triathlons may be your salvation through the wet, boring off seasons of the south.
